8 Lessons That Do Not Save The Soul: The Story Of Cornelius

There are many characters in the Bible whose personal histories serve as a lesson to us.  We can avoid a lot of things by learning from these characters.  This post focuses on one of the Bible characters – Cornelius.

In Acts chapter 10 there was a man named Cornelius, a Centurion who lived in Caesarea.  He was a Roman army officer who was a captain of the Halian Regiment.  He was a devout, God-fearing man, as was everyone in his household.  He gave generously to the poor and prayed regularly to God.

Cornelius’s story is so important because though a Gentile he received the gospel and the Holy Spirit.  God indeed shows no favoritism so much so the Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too. – Acts 10:45

There are vital lessons to learn from this wonderful character.

Lesson 1:  Never think that being religious is enough to save you.

Lesson 2:  Do not assume reverence to God or fear of God can save your soul

Being devoted to the things of God doesn’t make one a born again Christian.  Although Cornelius was so devout and worshipped God, yet he still needed to hear the gospel and respond to it.  That’s the reason Peter was sent to him so he can hear the message about Jesus Christ.  It was only after he and his entire household got born again that the Holy Spirit was poured out on them.

Being a God-fearing person does not necessarily mean you are born again.  Why?  Because demons fear too and so are unsaved men.  “You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.” – (James 2:19 NLT).  Then again 1 Samuel 12:18 (KJV) says So Samuel called unto the Lord; and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.

Lesson 3:  Giving alms or giving to the poor doesn’t guarantee you salvation

Lesson 4:  Continuous prayer does not constitute salvation

A prayerful life without Christ amounts to nothing.

We hear and see politicians, celebrities, individuals, etc giving to the poor all the time.  Do we say all these people are saved? The Pharisees did the same and yet rejected salvation. Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.  Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.” – Matthew 6:1-2

One may also give all he has and still be lost (1 Corinthians 13:3).  Some people are naturally good just like Cornelius.  A religious person whose continuous prayers were heard by God.  Prayerfulness does not generate into salvation.  A prayerful life without Christ amounts to nothing. Cornelius was devout (Acts 10:2) but he was not saved.  Devoutness in itself does not constitute salvation.  Men even pray in hell but it avails nothing – Luke 16:23-31

Lesson 5:  Seeing visions is not a sign that a person is saved

Lesson 6:  Being respected by men is not an assurance for salvation

Among the amazing things associated with Cornelius was the vision he received and also the fact that men respected him. Cornelius was just in the eyes of men that all the Jewish people respect him.  Notwithstanding all these, he was not saved.  We see the account of unsaved men in Job 33:14-30 having visions that didn’t save themHaving a vision is not a sign of personal salvation.

Lesson 7:  Having a good reputation of men does not redeem your soul

Lesson 8:  Fasting is not a sign that you are saved

Truly God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.

Apostle Paul in Acts 23:1 says he has always lived before God with a clear conscience but then again in Philippians 3:6 he indicates I was so zealous that I harshly persecuted the church.  And as for righteousness, I obeyed the law without fault.  A good reputation isn’t a qualification for salvation.

Then again, Cornelius fasted in Acts 10:30.  Fasting is one of the spiritual exercises of a Christian because it helps grow spiritually.  When fasting becomes just a norm then it loses its focus.  Hypocrites did fast weekly. (Matthew 6:16-18)

Cornelius was a good man with a beautiful personality but needed to hear and respond to the Good News.  Even though he didn’t know the Lord at the time, when the opportunity presented itself for him to be saved he grabbed it.  He did not reject the angel’s message but obeyed and sent for Peter.   The Lord’s message was delivered to Cornelius and his household.

The Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word and they spoke in tongues and got baptized.  Surprising isn’t it? That how can a gentile also receive Christ? With God all things are possible and He is no respecter of persons.

“So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him” (Acts 10:34-35 ESV).  And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles (Acts 10:45 ESV)

Have you come across persons who say “as for me I don’t do anything bad and even though I don’t go to church I believe in God?”  Is it possible that we have some ‘Corneliuses’ in the church today?

The Truth About Grace: 30 Things Grace Can Do

Grace is one of the most important concepts in the Bible.  It is the love of God and His unmerited favor.  It is true that grace cannot be withheld from man but does it mean grace is unconditional?   Does God give grace to men who disobey the gospel? 1 John 1:7 indicates But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.  God is responsible to persons when they walk in the light and remain true to the gospel.  For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.  And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, (Titus 2:11-12 NLT).  Grace instructs or teaches men to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures and to live soberly, righteously and godly.  If men then do not obey this teaching can grace be applied?

Anyone may:

  • Fall from grace. “Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace (Galatians 5:4 KJV).  Again scripture indicates men turn away so soon from God who, in his love and mercy, invited them to share the eternal life he gives through Christ (Galatians 1:6-8)
  • Receive grace in vain. “We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain (2 Corinthians 6:1 KJV)
  • Sin in spite of grace.  “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? (Romans 6:1 KJV)
  • Fail of the grace of God.  “Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;” (Hebrews 12:15 KJV)
  • Grow or not grow in it (2 Peter 3:18)
  • Frustrate it in his life (Galatians 2:21)

Here are 30 things grace can do.

It can:

1.  Save the world (Ephesian 2:8-9)

2.  Bring men to repentance (Zechariah 12:10)

3.  Overcome sin (Romans 5:20)

4.  Give one all good things (Psalm 84:11)

5.  Impart great blessings (Acts 4:33)

How To Live A Christian Life As A Woman

Living a Christian life as a woman in today’s world can be challenging.  So many things demand our attention and time on a daily basis which at times deprive us of growing in the Lord.  It is God’s purpose that we’ll grow and not remain babies.  2 Peter 3:18 states “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”  Here are some few points to help us live a Christian life as women.

1.  Believe the gospel and walk in the light

Believe the entire word of God at all times, and walk in the light as you received it. God is light and He is the Word. “But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7 NLT )

2.  Walk by faith.

Walk by faith not by sight or by feelings, because the “the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, My soul shall have no pleasure in him” (Hebrews 10:23-39; Galatians 5:16-26; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-13) Continue reading “How To Live A Christian Life As A Woman”

How To Read The Bible For Better Understanding

The Bible is a book that reveals the mind of God.  It is not just an ordinary book.  It is a book that will work wonders in every life, if acted upon and obeyed in faith and sincerity.  It is God’s inspired revelation and as such has to be read properly for better understanding. I have listed here some few procedures to help in reading your Bible.  Before you dive into any verse, chapter, or character study you need to, first of all, pray.  Ask the Holy Spirit for understanding.  Mind you, the Bible is God’s word and you can not understand it by your carnal mind.

1.  Frequently And Daily

The Bible has to be read daily, continuously and frequently.  “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8 NLT).  Joshua is advised to diligently observe and constantly read the word of God and of course, so much blessing is pronounced on him.  So is every man, christian or believer who takes Joshua’s place in regards to reading the word of God.  Understanding God’s word comes as you continuously meditate on it –  repeatedly, regularly, time and again, and upon all occasions. 14 Ways Of How And How Much To Love

Knowing how much God loves you is the beginning of loving others.  Believing that God loves you so much makes you love Him and others.  ” We love Him because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19 KJV).  You can’t give what you don’t have.

Identifying God’s unconditional love for me is the key to growing into a loving person.  So how and how much do you love God and others? Let’s take a look.

1.  With all your heart, soul, mind & strength (Matthew 22:37; Luke 10:27)
The first and great commandment is the love of God.  Love Him in the most sincere and perfect manner without hypocrisy.

2.  As one loves himself (Matthew 22:39
Our souls and bodies are so special to us and the way we take good care of them is the same we have to do for our brethren.

3.  Exceedingly (Psalm 119:167)
Loving God is not only by mouth but also obeying His word and keeping His commandments. Continue reading “14 Ways Of How And How Much To Love”

15 Reasons To Praise God

“Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” (Psalm 107:8 KJV).

The book of Psalms is full of praise and it tells so much reasons why we should praise God.  Psalm 92:1 indicates “IT IS A GOOD THING to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High:” In other words it is pleasant to praise God. 4 Secrets of Answered Prayer

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6)

Here are four secrets to answered prayer from Hebrews.

Please God.  One of the ways you please God is by having faith.  You also please God by obeying His commandments.  “Dear friends, if we don’t feel guilty, we can come to God with bold confidence.  And we will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him.” (1 John 3:21-22 NLT).   “And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.” (1 John 5:14-15 NLT) Continue reading “4 Secrets of Answered Prayer”

6 Areas Of Spiritual Growth

Growing in the knowledge of God is something we must desire as Christian. Bible says the more you grow the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.  In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.  The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:3-8 (NLT)

Here are some of the areas of Spiritual Growth

Through the Word of God
Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, 1 Peter 2:2 Continue reading “6 Areas Of Spiritual Growth”

How To Become Spiritually Mature

Spiritual growth is important in the life of every Christian.  When we get ‘born again’ we are taken through various bible teachings to help us grow in the Lord. Bible states in 1 Peter 2:2 that “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”   We are to be hungry for the word of God if we really want to grow.  Therefore growth is very vital in our walk with God.

Infants desire milk to grow well and such must be a Christian’s desires after the word of God. A look at 5 ways.

By Putting away Childish Things
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things – 1 Corinthians 13:11(KJV)

By Partaking of the Deeper Truths of the Gospel
You will never be able to eat solid spiritual food and understand the deeper things of God’s Word until you become better Christians and learn right from wrong by practicing doing right – Hebrews 5:14 (TLB)

How To Create Your Own Atmosphere For The Presence Of God

God inhabits the praises of his people.  When we worship God we literally give him a seat to sit down in our mist.  When our praises go up the presence of God comes down and all forms of evil spirits flee.   It is possible to create your own atmosphere for the presence of God everywhere you go.  Here are two basic things to help create your own atmosphere.

Music:
Worshipping God with the right kind of music helps create an atmosphere for the presence of God.   Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness (Psalm 29:2). One powerful way to get yourself out of sadness or bad moments is through worship.  Worshipping God creates an atmosphere of miracles because God lives in your worship.  Worshiping God can be done anywhere and anytime.  You can carry worship CDs everywhere you go and play them in your car, office or at home.  You can also download or copy the right kind of music (Christian music) on your phone or external device and listen to anytime and at any place

Preaching
Bible teaches that faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17).  Listening to preaching builds your faith and makes you wise.  2 Timothy 3:15 indicates “and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus”.  Preaching is the word of God.  The word of God is God himself and God speaks to us through his word.  I believe worship and preaching are the two main items for creating the right atmosphere for the presence of God.  You can also carry preaching CDs with you everywhere you go.

Personally, I always create my own atmosphere with worship songs and preaching.  I love music a lot and of course the right kind of music – be it instrumental or singing.  Simply put I love songs which glorify God.  I use my phone a lot and I got myself a bigger memory card for songs and preaching.

As a Christian, you cannot leave a life without worship because God loves worship.  His presence comes down when you worship and evil can’t stand worship.  Bible teaches how the evil Spirit left Saul and was made well after David played an harp (1 Samuel 16:23).  2 Chronicles 5:13 also indicates how the presence of the Lord filled the house when the musicians in the temple played instruments and worshipped God.

Arise, daughter of God and worship the Lord in the beauty of His holiness.  May chains be broken as you create your own atmosphere for the presence of God.

7 Promises To The Tempted

Temptations will come your way whether you like it or not.  God did not promise us trouble-free life, but He promised never to leave or forsake us.  He promised to always show a way of escape.  I have my own fair share of temptations and still come across temptations, but one of my favorite scriptures that keeps me moving is 1 Corinthians 10:13 which states “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.”

You realized from the above that firstly, the temptation is common to man – a temptation which one is able to bear.  Secondly, the temptation won’t be more than you can stand.  It won’t be beyond your God-enabled ability and Thirdly, God will provide a way of escape.

So what are these 7 promises?

Power to Tread on Evil Forces
Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.  Luke 10:19.  This promise talks about preservation and protection.  He’ll preserve you from danger, from the power of Satan and from wicked and crafty men and from mankind in general because He has divine power. “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”  Mark 9:23

Verses For When You Are Tempted To Give Up

“We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.  We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NLT)

Life is about warfare.  You have to fight through it all – fighting for things you have or things you don’t have.  When you need a good marriage you’ll have to fight for it and to keep the marriage you have to fight.  When you feel as if all hope is lost you still have to gather courage and fight because the grace of God is so sufficient to pull you through.  For this reason, you cannot afford to give up.  Fight for your kids, fight for your husband, fight for your marriage, fight for everything that doesn’t seem right in your life.  Don’t lose your faith because victory belongs to Jesus.

Be encouraged by these verses when you are tempted to give up.

Psalm 27:14  Don’t be impatient. Wait for the Lord, and he will come and save you! Be brave, stouthearted, and courageous. Yes, wait and he will help you.

Romans 12:12  Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.

Psalm 146:5  But happy is the man who has the God of Jacob as his helper, whose hope is in the Lord his God

Psalm 39:7  And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you. Continue reading “Verses For When You Are Tempted To Give Up”

Special Promises To Those Who Exercise Faith

God expects us to exercise faith because it pleases Him.  How do we exercise faith?  By hearing and hearing the word of God because it’s in hearing that we believe and by believing we take action by putting what we believe to work.

“For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ . . . And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” Galatians 3:26-29.  Abraham was a man who lived a life of faith and he’s known as the father of faith.  Christians are also heirs and spiritual descendants of Abraham and are to receive their eternal inheritance of these promises through faith.

Here are seven promises to those who exercise faith

Answer to prayer
And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive (Matthew 21:22)

Power
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. (John 14:12)

For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.  (Romans 10:11)

But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God’s servant to proclaim it.  (Colossians 1:23)

Sonship
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:12) Continue reading “Special Promises To Those Who Exercise Faith”

7 Examples Of Great Faith

Hebrews chapter 11:1 gives a Biblical definition of faith – “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”  Faith is important in the life of a Christian because without it, you cannot please God (Hebrews 11:6).  Be inspired by these ordinary people who demonstrated great faith and received their healing.

The Canannite Woman
“Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed.  Matthew 15:28

The Leper
Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.”  Matthew 8:2

The Centurion
When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.  Matthew 8:10 Continue reading “7 Examples Of Great Faith”

Scriptures On Revival

“Will you not revive us againthat your people may rejoice in you? Psalm 85:6 (ESV).
Revival basically means to make alive or a spiritual awareness.  Revival is needed in our lives again and again to make us live again.  Revival is needed to restore that which is no longing working.  Revival is needed to bring a dead situation alive.  .  Our personal walk with God need revival, our churches need revival & our nations/governments need revival.  So why do we need revival?

Revival is needed for Christ to prevail in the land.  Revival is needed to restore the zeal of God in our personal lives and the church.  Revival is needed when our love for God has grown cold – not getting involve in the things of God, having no compassion for the lost, indulging in sin, etc.  It is needed for the spirit of righteousness to prevail in the land.  Revival is needed to rebuild the alter of prayer.  Revival is needed where there is demonic doctrine and satan worship.

So do we need to pray for revival? Of course yes and here are some scriptures.

Hosea 6:2  After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him.

Lamentations 3:40  Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the Lord!

Hosea 10:12  Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.

Psalm 143:11  Quicken me, O Lord, for thy name’s sake: for thy righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble. Continue reading “Scriptures On Revival”

Philippians 4:7  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

4 Most Powerful Prayers For Your Children

We are full of so much joy and happiness on special occasions like Christmas, New Year, Weddings, Birthdays, Valentine days, Graduation, etc.  We feel loved seeing our friends and loved ones around us. So much joy, laughter and giving of gifts is the order of the day because the day has been marked ‘SPECIAL’.  So is the birth of a child.  I see the day a child is born to be a joyous day.  The pain during pregnancy and delivery are all forgotten immediate the beautiful gift is born.  Psalm 127:3 make us understand that children are an heritage (a gift) from the Lord.  John 16:21  also indicated that “When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.”

A gift needs to be taken care of and praying for our children is one of the ways to show our love and concern for their physical, spiritual & emotional needs.  Be encouraged by these scriptures.

God’s Blessings
Pray for their lives to be preserved by God and that they’ll walk in the fear and knowledge of God.  We saw this in the life of Abraham who prayed for his son Ishmael.  So Abraham said to God, “May Ishmael live under your special blessing!” Genesis 17:18 (NLT)

A Devoted Heart
Pray for your children to have a devoted heart to keep God’s commands.  An example is David, for Solomon Give my son Solomon the wholehearted desire to obey all your commands, laws, and decrees, and to do everything necessary to build this Temple, for which I have made these preparations.” 1 Chronicles 29:19 (NLT)

Forgiveness Of Sins
Pray and constantly (i.e. daily) ask for the forgiveness of sins for your children.  Job consecrated and offered burnt offerings to the Continue reading “4 Most Powerful Prayers For Your Children”
